A Good (And Windy) Friday

I’ll start off by hoping everyone has a great holiday weekend. I, for one, am eternally grateful for all the many blessings that God has bestowed upon me and my family. I respect everyone’s right to religious freedom in America. As for me and my family, we will worship our one God and know that through His son, Jesus Christ, we are saved.

I drove out to the Texas City Dike this morning. Needless to say, the wind is howling. I’ve come to expect that lately. It’s all been wind and no rain. We are suffering drought conditions and the wind is blowing sand and dust everywhere. But someday soon I hope, we will get some relief from both the wind and dry conditions.

Surprisingly, the dike was still very crowded. Even brave boaters made their way out into the bay to fish their favorite spots. Many families were lining the granite rocks trying their best to cast their lines against the strong southerly wind. I went to the end and met up with a fishing comrade, Jack. He had several lines out in hopes of catching some supper. I chatted with him for a while, handed him a few of my favorite hooks, and headed back to the base of the Dike.

I turned on Skyline Drive and headed for the floodgate. There were several wade fishermen out along the north shoreline no doubt looking for some Speckled Trout. I didn’t see any landed, but this time of year wade fishing can be quite productive.

After parking my old fishing Jeep, I grabbed the camera and headed down the hill on the Moses Lake side of the floodgate. A group of fishermen were throwing gold and silver spoons into the strong incoming current that was passing through the floodgate. In just a few minutes of watching, they had landed several nice sized Spanish Mackerel. Those feisty fish can really give you a workout on light tackle. It appeared that those fellas had supper plans already figured out.

I don’t know if I’ll fish this weekend or not. The wind is supposed to be still strong, but water conditions really didn’t look too bad. I may just round up my granddaughter and try to find an area protected from the wind. Don’t let it stop you from getting out. Enjoy the warm weather and have a fun weekend.

Here’s some shots from my visit to the Texas City Dike and floodgate this morning.

thanks for the info dave, will have to tryit in the near future.

  2. Way to go Dale. Nothing better than a fight from a slot red on light tackle. Mosquito Island and the deep hole around it can be a good spot this time of year. You would be amazed at how many speckled trout are caught in the black of night wade fishing around there. Catch a night when the wind has laid and fish with black Super Spook topwaters. Of all colors, black seems to work the best. I hear the Speck’s eyesight is built to see black when it’s dark. Couple that with the sound of the “walking the dog” action of the lure, and it’s killer. You can’t see the fish hit, but you can sure feel him when he does. It’ a blast. If you fish this way, wade the northeast side of Mosquito. I know it’s shallow and comprised of a huge oyster shell reef, but that’s where the trout seem to congregate; no doubt ambushing small bait fish in shallow as the water cools. Wade at a 45 degree angle away from the island until about waist deep. Try it, you’ll love it when everything comes together.

hit the area near the deep hole off of skyline and mosqiuto island sat. about 2pm-5pm. landed 2 keeper reds and a sheephead that was about 10lbs. my buddy who has been fishing about 4 times in the past 6 yrs. lost 2 big hookups! i was out at my hotspot before that and caught 7 trout from 16-20 inches. also caught 2 sandies that were 15+, and 1 24in red all right before sunup using artificial lures. good luck and tight lines.

  4. Rico, thank you my friend. Hope you and your wife enjoy a peaceful Easter weekend. Yes, it’s been busy here as you can tell by my limited posting. Sometimes life just gets in the way of fishing. I’m hoping the weather lines out soon. We are experiencing some strange and harsh conditions with high winds and little to no rain. The salinity of the saltwater is going up I’m sure and the fish will react differently to it in how they feed and travel. Hope to see you soon.

  5. David, me and P.J. wish you and your wife a Happy Easter and in case you get to do some fishing, Tight Lines.
It has been a hectic week for me and so again there was no time for fishing at all. Besides of that, the wind held me back from fishing too.
I will try to shoot you an email over the weekend and tell you more.
    Take Care my friend
    Rico
