Thursday Thunder

The weather around Galveston Bay has been unstable to say the least. Today, we are experiencing thundershowers with brief periods of heavy rain. I rode to the end of the Texas City Dike to find only a handful of diehard fisherman with lines in the water. Didn’t see any big black drum landed, but a few good sized gafftopsail catfish were caught along with some pinfish.

Tuesday evening, a friend and I loaded up the generator and thousand watt light and fished the end of the Dike. It was windy from the southeast and after five hours, we hung it up and headed home with our tails between our legs. Another skunk trip. But it’s just a matter of time before the stars line up correctly and we’ll knock ‘em out.

The water temperature is now in the seventies. Mullet are showing up along the granite rocks, so bring your cast nets and get you some. There is no better bait for a wide assortment of fish that frequent Galveston Bay. I use the Oxygen Response System that Boyd’s One Stop sells to keep my shrimp and mullet alive. There’s nothing else like it. Pure oxygen is the way to go. I’m not advertising for Boyd’s. I just tell it like it is. If you don’t know that I’m talking about, ask me and I’ll elaborate. I’ll even go out on a limb and say that I could get you a discount if you decide to get you one. No more aerators, dead batteries, or frustration.

I’m planning a beach fishing trip Saturday if the weather behaves. Planning a run to High Island and meet up with some fellow fisherman. If you’re open on Saturday, let me know, and I’ll follow up with directions, etc. Be safe and have fun…and catch a fish for me if you can. ;)

Late addition:

I’m going to cancel the beach trip to High Island. I’ll most likely be at the end of the Texas City Dike Saturday morning.

  1. Hello Brandy. Yes, fishing from the dike can be productive during the hot summer months. But the key is to fish early morning hours or late evening hours when the water is a little cooler. Bait congregates in the shallows during those hours and the fish know it. Even night fishing can be great with a light and generator. Light seems to attract bait and the bigger fish usually go where their food source gathers.

I love your blog, it’s been great to read. Can you tell me if the dike is good to fish in the summer? It seems so hot! I can’t seem to find any websites or blogs that answer my question. Thanks!

I have been frequenting the Texas City Dikes quite a bit over the past year and I was wondering which is the best side on? Also, is it better to fish towards the end of the Dike or does it really matter?

  4. Hello Ty. Thanks for posting. I’ll be sure to check out your site.

    Hi Dave!

The Texas City Dike has been one of my favorite fishing spots for a long time (Texas City Native). The floodgates, Mosquito Island, left & channel side with night lights and generator. If I’m not fishing, I’m just cruising in my truck to see what others are catching. There’s always a fisherman battling a fish along the Dike. I was glad to do a google search and find your blog man. Keep the post coming. Weather is warm and tides are strong. -Tight Lines-

Does anyone know of a great location in or near Texas City/Galveston to catch blue crab? Thanks for the help!

To Fishboy…I am new to fishing saltwater, anykind of fishing really. I have been going about once a week for a year to the dike. I have found the end of the dike to be very frustrating bc I see others who say “All I seem to catch are the big ones. (while frowning)” or “We are from out of state. We caught two 36″+ reds yesterday.” and I see them catch two more!! All the while I catch nothing, get snagged, birds stealing my bait etc.
Look at my post below and know when I say Keep Trying, it is worth it!

Going out to the dike friday night, both friends bailed on me.

Anyone (dave) *cough* have any suggestion’s on a good spot? I have fished the end with all baits ( cut, shrimp, crab ) skunked every time but once when i got a shovel head. Its supposed to be great fishing till about 4am saturday.

I do not have lights but try my hardest to be friends with the folks that do. Beer usually works!
